Web and Book Launch
Jemma Tonkin-Michell, Tony Tonkin, Dr Deidre Michell, David O'Brien, Dr Mary Hood
I wish to thank the fifty people who attended the recent book and web launch. A special thanks to David O’Brien for inviting his family. I will never forget him talking about the struggles encountered by his family and his sister, who was clearly moved by David’s comments, came forward and gave him one of the warmest hugs you could ever imagine. There was not a dry eye to be found.
David epitomised what PVP is about. The sharing of your experiences and the power those lived experiences and wisdom have on others. Again thank you David, you are a very special man. I hope people purchase your poems so they can discover you further.
It was sad that Ryszard Szablicki was not able to attend the launch of his book. We are hoping that we will be able to launch his book in Melbourne and Brisbane over the next few months. You may read here Dr Mary Hoods comments on Ryszard’s book “Beyond the Orphanage Years”. Dr Hood commented on the importance of this book, social workers and psychologists or anyone who works with people who have experienced the emotional distress caused by childhood abuse. This is a wonderful book and is an important contribution to the growing body of works which focus on those children placed in institutions which were harsh, brutal, abusive and unforgiving. These stories depict amazing resilience and recovery and offer an opportunity for us all to reflect on the abuse inflicted on children by a society who saw them as soiled and damaged through no fault of their own.
These stories remind us that we should never repeat the damage we caused children in the past but encourage us to find different ways to parent, and more effective ways of protecting children from harm. These books remind us that the journey is just beginning and that we all must participate in making the life of children a joyous and fulfilling experience.
Past Project - Recipes for Survival
We encourage you to read this book. The book was launched in 2012. This book is a compilation of stories told by those who were foster children or in institutional care. This book is about the emotional pain experienced. It will make you laugh and it will make you cry, but it will help you to understand how these people have survived.
